Creative Soul on the Road

An Interview with Rebeka Vodrazkova on building a life according to her own vision

A successful Slovak living in Denmark who knew already from her childhood that she wanted to pursue a career in creative work.

Rebeka is an inspiring young woman who lives her life to the fullest and with determination, according to her own intuition and with her own inner compass. She is naturally very beautiful, talented and definitely goal-oriented.

In today's interview, which we recorded alongside a walk on a Copenhagen beach, we talk to her about her passion for creating and how she builds a life of her own.

Rebeka, what do you love doing the most? Tell me all about your passions!

I love my work! I love doing graphic design and visuals and being creative. I also love photography and everything related to it. Additionally, I adore traveling, especially to natural environments, the sea, and embarking on various adventures.

Among my adventures, I'd mention my trip to Jordan and camping in the desert – that was amazing! My solo trip to Bali was another highlight. Although I went there to visit a friend, I stopped in Singapore on the way, which absolutely fascinated me. Solo travel turned out to be a very enjoyable experience for me.

What activities make you lose track of time?

I lose track of time when I'm immersed in my creative work. I enjoy creating, producing visuals, and solving various creative tasks and problems. Many times, I could sit there for hours and hours, and the only reason I stop is because I can't sit at the computer all day – I need to go outside too. But even then, I often forget myself and feel like staying up all night working on something, editing photos, or doing graphic design.

If you could spend a day with someone who shares similar life passions, who would it be, and what would you do together?

I'm surrounded by different people with different passions, and that's why I also enjoy spending time with people who have different passions than me, ones that are still unknown to me.

One of the things I enjoy the most is doing something with someone who is experiencing something new for the first time. For example, going with a friend who has never traveled before and showing her the magic of travel. Also, when someone else gets me excited about their passions, ones that I probably wouldn't go into on my own, I enjoy that.

Before we delve into your life purpose, let me ask, how important is it for you to live your life with purpose?

To tell you the truth, I don't think much about the meaning of life. I believe it's constantly changing and will hold a different meaning for me at every stage of life. That's why I don't overthink it.

Passions bring purpose. What's your life purpose?

When I'm old, I want to say to myself: "Wooooow, what an amazing life I had!" I want to try a lot of new things, have diverse experiences, develop myself, and learn many new things. I want to focus on myself because I believe that by working on myself, I can be the most useful to other people.

I would love to travel extensively and get to know new cultures. I especially enjoy unplanned experiences and unexpected adventures. That's why I like to travel to countries I don't know much about and don't plan much beforehand. I like to be surprised. For example, Venice – I really didn't want to go to there because I heard it was dirty and full of tourists. We got there, and it was amazing.

There are some people who may not be as lucky as you because they haven't found their professional fulfillment or purpose yet. How did you discover your mission in life? How do you know this is the right one?

I think I've felt it from a young age. I've enjoyed drawing and taking pictures since I was 10 years old. Sometimes I wonder if it was influenced by the fact that my parents had a photo studio at the time and that I perceived the world through a lens from an early age. Maybe if they had been done something else, I would have done something else too, but since I felt that way as a child, I think it would have found me one day anyway!

You mentioned that your life goals change and evolve over time. How has that been for you?

10 years ago, when I went to Denmark, I had a clear goal to become a graphic designer. Now I have achieved it and I am wondering what's next. One of the goals I am thinking about is having my own photo studio, but right now I am not sure if that is really what I want. I have already achieved the goals I had in the past, and it is an amazing feeling. That's why I tell myself that if I figure out now what I want to do in 10 years, there is a good chance that I will succeed.

Another area that attracts me is tourism. I would enjoy working in a travel agency, planning trips or creating graphics for a travel agency. If I didn't do what I do now, maybe I would go in this direction.

Taking pictures for National Geographic also sounds tempting to me, but I'm not sure if it would be completely for me. You need degrees in zoology or biology for this job, and I don't see myself in this field that much.

So right now my priority is to figure out what I really want next, and when I do, I believe I can do it. Maybe an experienced coach could guide me. I'm thinking about trying life coaching.

What advice would you give to someone struggling to identify their life passions and purpose?

It's good to try a lot of things, but at the same time, when you try a lot of different things, you don't dedicate yourself to anything in depth. You should definitely try, but keep in mind that when you just try something, it won't be the same as when you go all in.

Okay, and now, what do you actually do to make a living? What's your profession? What pays your bills & dreams?

I currently work as a graphic designer in a creative marketing team for a photo editing software company. This job combines my two passions - photography and graphics. In addition, I also do freelance photography for clients, which I also enjoy very much. However, it is sometimes difficult to combine full-time work with other projects.

How did you get into this job? What motivated you to take on this job, and what do you enjoy/not enjoy about it?

I got into this job by complete accident. In addition to my previous job, which I already wanted to leave, I spent a year and a half building my freelance portfolio so that I could quit. Just before I left, I came across this interesting job offer for Capture One, a photographic software that I use myself and know is very popular among photographers.

The company impressed me and I was attracted by the idea of working in their creative environment. So, more or less without any expectations, I sent in my CV. When I got hired, I was thrilled, but at the same time I kind of went against my original plan, to quit my job and become a freelancer.  So I was a little afraid of going back to the office and the stereotype I experienced in my previous job. However, I told myself that I would give it a try and in the worst case scenario, I would leave and freelance after all.

And here I am today! And I'm moving from graphic designer to creative art director. We have a great team here! We are all of similar age, in the same stage of life, we love travel and adventure. We often spend time together outside of work, which I didn't experience in my previous company. Here we are all friends. I also appreciate the flexibility of my working hours and the company culture. In Denmark, no one cares how much and when you work, only the result is important. I enjoy this freedom and responsibility immensely.

And what do I not like? I really don't know. Maybe that it's in Denmark and it rains a lot here.

What did you want to become when you were a kid? Do you still remember?

Yes, an astronaut, an archaeologist, a policewoman. I'm laughing about it myself now. But later I knew I wanted to do something visual.

What do you value the most about you, what do you consider your greatest talents and your greatest life success so far?

My independence. I can take care of myself in any situation and in any country. I believe in myself and I know that if I decide to do something, I can do it. Besides that, I appreciate my hardworking and honesty. More than once someone has told me something like, "You have your life together!". So I guess I consider that one of my successes too.

If you could give a TED Talk on your life passions and purpose, what would be the main message you'd convey?

I wouldn't give a TED Talk because I don't like to speak in public. I also don't like to give advice, I feel like I have no advice to give to other people. I would rather give a presentation about some of my travels - a travel presentation, combined with my travel photos.
